SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA

 

DISTINCTIVE UNIT INSIGNIA

 

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia.  Description:   A silhouetted right cylinder 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height and 2 inches (5.08 cm) in width.  Within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) blue border fimbriated by a 1/16 inch (.16 cm) white inner edge, on a blue field a white serrated vertical band 1 3/32 inches (2.78 cm) in width charged with a red cartridge 2 5/8 inches (6.67 cm) in height.

        Symbolism:   Blue and white are the colors used for Infantry.  The serrated section is symbolic of close combat and counterattack abilities.  The cartridge alludes to the unit’s capabilities of destroying the enemy and repelling his assault with fire powers.  Red, the most powerful color of the spectrum, represents the striking power of the unit.     

        Background:   The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 14 December 1962.  It was amended to correct the description on 12 February 1963.  (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-307) 

 

Distinctive Unit Insignia.  Description:   On a blue oval 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height, a gold caltrap above a blue scroll with the motto “FOREVER FORWARD” in gold lettering.

        Symbolism:   The color blue is used for Infantry, the gold color symbolizing leadership and achievement.  The caltrap is an ancient offensive weapon employed to deny the use of certain pertinent terrain to hostile forces and alludes to the attack, seizure and staying power of the Brigade.   

        Background:   The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 11 April 1967.  It was amended to correct the description on 15 September 1972.
