Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description

A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a silver color metal anserated cross charged with a pomegranate slipped and leaved maroon, above a maroon scroll inscribed “FIDE ET FIDUCIA” in silver color metal letters.

Symbolism

Maroon and white (silver) are the colors of the Army Medical Department.  The cross is a symbol of faith; the snakes are the symbol of Aesculapius, the God of Medicine; and the pomegranate is a symbol of medicine and plenty.  The motto translates to “With Faith and Confidence.”

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 61st Surgical Hospital on 3 March 1942.  It was redesignated for the 93d Evacuation Hospital on 25 September 1942.
