Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A rectangular shaped embroidered item, arced at top and bottom, edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border, the background divided horizontally, red above and below four (4) rows of alternating white and black checks, displaying a yellow representation of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, surmounted by two conjoined yellow (2) closed books with white pages, both slanted in perspective, one to the right and the other to the left. Attached at top an arced red scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border and inscribed ‘IUPUI’ in yellow. Overall dimensions are 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width and 3 3/8 inches (8.57 cm) in height.

Symbolism
The colors are adapted from the two universities – red from Indiana University and black from Purdue University. The checkered pattern, indicative of the Indianapolis Speedway, alludes to the geographic location of the University. The representation of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a landmark in downtown Indianapolis, further identifies with the location of the University. The two (2) books refer to the merging of two (2) universities to form Indiana University-Purdue University. They also represent knowledge and growth in academic and athletic endeavors and in military science. Yellow/gold commemorated excellence.

Background: The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 10 March 1982 currently amended to include a manufactured drawing on 24 July 2014. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-228)

Description
A silver colored metal and enamel shield shaped device, 1 1/8 (2.86 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Cheque Sable and Argent (Silver), an open book Gules, garnished of the second, overall a sword palewise, blade downwards, the pommel extended above the shield, of the second. Attached below, a silver scroll double folded on each side, inscribed ''IUPUI'', in black.

Symbolism
The black and white checky pattern, representative of the Indianapolis Speedway, alludes to the City of Indianapolis, the location of the University. The open book is indicative of knowledge, academic and military science. The sword represents the military and leadership.

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 10 March 1982.
