Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On a maroon disc with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) gold border, 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter overall, a maroon disc bordered gold bearing a gold cross throughout charged with a vertical maroon sword within the inscription “ELON” above and “COLLEGE” below in gold letters 3/8 inch (.93 cm) in height.

Symbolism
Maroon gold are the colors of the College. The cross alludes to the relation of the college to the church and to the commitments of the college to general Christian principles and values. The sword is indicative of the military and to leadership. The cross and sword together reflect the motto of the College, “FIGHTIN’ CHRISTIANS.”

Background
The shoulder sleeve was originally authorized 23 January 1985. It was amended to add subdued colors and metric dimensions on 8 March 1991, currently amended to include an updated manufactured drawing on 21 April 2014. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-72)

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield blazoned: Sanguine a cross throughout Or, in chief a demi-torch enflamed and an oak leaf of the like, overall a sword palewise of the first. Attached above the shield, a gold scroll inscribed “ELON'' and attached below the shield a gold scroll inscribed “LUMEN NUMEN” all in maroon letters.

Symbolism
The college colors are maroon and gold. The cross and sword are indicative of the college’s motto, “FIGHTIN’ CHRISTIANS.” The torch enflamed represents not only the knowledge to be gained at the college, but also the transmittal of such knowledge by the teachers. The three flames of the torch are representative of the three geographic divisions of the college in North Carolina, namely Burlington, Greensboro and the center and dominant one, Piedmont, where the college is located. The oak leaf is synonymous with the college name Elon which means oak in Hebrew.
