Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, a carabao’s head caboshed Azure; on a canton of the last a chevron and a fleur-de-lis of the first. Attached below the shield a Silver scroll inscribed “PERSEVERENTIA TRIUMPHAT” in Blue letters.

Symbolism
The colors are blue and white (silver) for Infantry. Descent from the 185th Infantry Regiment is shown by use of the same basic design of the shield of that organization’s coat of arms in reversed colors with the carabao head added to symbolize service in the Philippine Islands during World War II. The motto translates to “Perseverance Triumphs.”

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 224th Infantry Regiment on 26 January 1951. It was redesignated for the 224th Armored Infantry Battalion on 8 December 1954. It was amended to correct the description on 1 September 1955. The insignia was rescinded on 5 July 1961.
