Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, on an augmented pale Sanguine fimbriated Or in chief a mullet and in base a gopher (S. tridecemlineatus) sejant both of the last (Or). Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "POUR LA PATRIE" in Blue letters.

Symbolism
The basic color of the shield is blue for Infantry. The pale is maroon edged gold ? the State colors ? and on this is charged "L'Etoile du Nord" and the gopher ? emblem of the State of Minnesota. The motto translates to "For Native Land."

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 9 December 1925. It was rescinded on 2 October 1958.
