The black compass rose alludes to strategy, stability, worldwide scope and day/night capabilities. The gold sword represents military strength and military preparedness. The blue electrical flashes encircling the compass rose suggest the organization's mission. The gold laurel wreath symbolizes excellence and high ideals. The red scroll signifies leadership, devotion to duty and a commitment to total readiness.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved on 7 Nov 1988. It was amended on 20 Jul 1989 to revise the description and symbolism.
